MAKING OF A LIGHT OBJECT

Bleach drawn onto black paper, filmed from above, for a panel meant to be lit from behind.

The finished black paper panel seen flat from above on a white table, covered in pale copper bleach drawings: a bird-headed figure, a bare tree, a standing man, a hand holding a cube, and a wavy line along the bottom edge.
A sheet of black paper on a white table, and a nib loaded with bleach. Over about a minute the sheet fills: a bird-headed figure, a bare tree, a hand holding a cube, a standing man, a run of small marks along the bottom edge. The paper is folded twice across its width, so the scene arrives in three panels. Bleach removes rather than adds. Every line is dye lifted out of the sheet, and the colour is whatever the black gives up — copper where the nib passes once, cream where it sits longest. Nothing is painted on. The drawing is a subtraction, made at the speed of a pen. The panel was drawn to be lit from behind: light passes where the dye is gone. The footage stops at the finished sheet, so the object in its lit state is not on record here. What survives is the making, and it survives whole — blank paper to full scene, in order.
Medium
Bleach drawing on black paper, recorded on video
Materials
sodium hypochlorite (household bleach), black paper, dip pen / nib holder, small open jar
Dimensions
Not measured. The sheet reads as a single landscape leaf with two vertical fold creases dividing it into three panels.
Role
Artist; sole author of the drawing and the recording

Gallery

A nearly blank black sheet on a white table. One hand steadies the paper, the other draws with a wooden nib holder. Two small pale marks have appeared.
The first marks. Four strokes at the top edge, a small cluster below.
The black sheet part-filled. A bare tree with fine branches has been drawn in pale gold; a forearm crosses the frame, its tattoo echoing the marks on the paper.
The tree goes in. The bleach reads gold where the nib passes once.
The sheet about two thirds filled. A bird-headed figure in a wide hat, a standing man, a horned head and a tree, all in copper bleach lines on black. A hand works at the tree with a nib.
Figures arrive. The three fold panels start to read as one scene.
The sheet nearly complete. A tall thin tower has been added beside the tree, and a wavy line runs the full width of the bottom edge. A hand holds the paper flat at the lower right.
Late. The tower and the ground line close the composition.
