MAKING THE EXPERIMENTAL BOOKS
Paper folded, soaked, folded shut and bound
How the experimental books are made, which is not shown anywhere else in the archive.
It starts with paper, not with a mark. A large sheet is folded loosely on itself and lowered into something dark until it goes the colour of tea, then left in a shallow tray of white crust to keep working. The chlorine takes colour out rather than putting it on, so this stage is the drawing: what the liquid reaches is what will read as pale, and anywhere it sits too long comes back as a hole.
What comes out is folded shut into a long speckled bundle, small enough to hold, and bound tight in blue thread. Opened again it is a concertina that stands on its own edges.
The last picture is the table it happens on, under a low lamp, with a ruler, syringes and a row of treated cards already laid out on boards.
