THE HEAD

A skull's worth of line, and nothing else

A head front on, drawn as one dense tangle of pale gold line, the strands massing where the skull would be and thinning down the neck

A head, front on, drawn as one continuous tangle of pale gold line on a brown black sheet. There is no outline anywhere. The strands simply crowd together where the skull would be and thin out down the neck until the sheet takes over, so the head exists only as a change in density.

It is the same argument as the horse made on a harder subject. A horse can be recognised from a silhouette; a head cannot, and this one gives you no silhouette at all. What arrives instead is presence without a face, which is closer to how you actually remember one.

Drawn in December 2017, at the front of the run where the drawings leave the white page.
