THE MARKS PAINTINGS
Thirteen canvases and panels where the mark is the whole subject

Thirteen paintings from 2020, acrylic and spray paint on stretched canvas and on wood panel. Sizes run from a 20,5 by 43 centimetre triptych up to a panel two metres across. Most are white grounds carrying a small number of marks, with wide empty space left around them.
The mark is the whole subject. Each canvas fixes a count or a kind of gesture and stops there — twenty marks, three sequences of movement, four squares of spray. Nothing is filled in afterwards, so the white is not backing. It is the interval that lets one gesture be read against the next.
Made in Barcelona. Each work was photographed onto its own presentation plate, floated on a flat colour field with the title, city, medium and size set in small type beneath.
They were hung that November at Espronceda, in the HYELTW? show — YOU COMPOSED across six butted panels on the long wall, the four RANDOM MARKS squares in a row above the doorway, the rest leaning in the room before the doors opened. The photographs at the end of this gallery are that week.
