THIS IS THE REAL WORLD

A world of blue sculpture, built and walked inside VR

A blue figure sits on a low block among faceted blue rock forms on a white ground, with a spiked shape floating behind.
Blue sculptures set out in a warehouse and on a white plain. Two figures sit on a landmass. A giant head rests on the flat of a long blade. Bodies pile into drifts. Ferns grow to the size of trees. Everything is the same blue, untextured, faceted where the hand left it. It was all made inside Microsoft Maquette, a modelling tool you use standing up, in a headset. Shapes get pushed and stacked at full body scale, by arm, so they keep the roughness of the gesture. Nothing was cleaned up afterwards. The single blue is the tool's own clay. The renders are dated 27 and 28 July 2020; the recorded modelling sessions run on into October. A Unity build for Oculus and OpenVR exists. It has only ever been walked in a headset — these flat frames are the only way it has been seen.
