GEOMETRIC ORDER
Three canvases where the mark is put under a grid
FIRST, SECOND and THIRD GEOMETRIC ORDER, 2020. Acrylic and spray on canvas, 80 by 60, 60 by 60 and 40 by 40 centimetres. Three of the thirteen paintings made that year in Barcelona.
Everywhere else in that group the mark is left alone in white space. Here it is enclosed. Each canvas sets its gestures inside drawn boxes, bands of flat yellow and blocks of speckled grey, so a stroke that was the whole subject elsewhere becomes one element among several, held in place by the geometry around it. The same hand, put under an order it did not have.
The last three pictures are the canvases standing on the studio floor in July 2020, one of them leaning beside another from the set. They are here because photographed flat and cropped to their own edges these read as flat layouts rather than as paintings, which is exactly the mistake this page was first published with.
The close view before them is one of the surfaces on its own, a thick brush stroke meeting a bar of yellow, so the raw material can be seen beside what was done with it.
