TEXTURED MARKS
Two canvases in red, turquoise and black

TEXTURED MARKS and MULTIPLE COMPOSITION OF TEXTURED MARKS, 2020. Acrylic and spray on canvas, 100 by 70 and 80 by 60 centimetres. Two more of the thirteen paintings made that year in Barcelona.

These are the loud end of the group. Where most of the thirteen hold black and red on white and leave the rest empty, these add turquoise and then fill the canvas with texture: dragged bars, sprayed haloes, hard-edged blocks, dry brush pulled until it breaks. The mark is still the subject, but it is repeated across the whole surface instead of being given room, so the eye never settles on one gesture.

The first canvas builds in horizontal bands. The second lets the marks run loose across the field, which is what its longer name is describing.

They were photographed in the studio in July 2020, each standing on the floor and then close enough to see the weave of the canvas through the paint. The site had shown one small plate of this pair until now.
