CAUSTIC ON CLOTH

Bleach on black cloth — the same method, a different ground.

A large square of black cloth laid flat, drawn on in pale bleach: a head with a wide brim above a body of fine root-like strokes, a tall spire rising from the lower edge, a small city along the bottom, circles and framed signs scattered across the field. Horizontal fold creases run the full width.
Sodium hypochlorite drawn onto black cloth. Not a stretched canvas — a loose sheet of plain-weave cotton that was folded and stored, so the creases still run across it in bands. Bleach behaves on cloth the way it behaves on paper. It lifts the dye out of the ground, so every mark arrives pale and stays pale. What changes is the surface. Paper holds a continuous line; a weave breaks it. Each stroke here picks up the grid of the threads, and where the bleach ran it travelled along the warp instead of soaking in. One large cloth carries a whole composition: a head, a spire rising from the lower edge, a city along the bottom, small framed signs floating above it. A second is looser — loops, drips, one long vertical run. They sit beside the caustic drawings on paper as the same method on a different ground.

Close view of the same cloth: a pale spire runs floor to ceiling of the frame, a drawn cube holds a soft disc, and fine root-like sprays fall from the upper right. The weave of the cloth is visible through every stroke.
Detail — the spire, the cube, and the sprays. The weave breaks each line.
Close view of the lower band of the cloth: a bleached skyline of thin towers along the bottom, a broad tapering mass at the left, and two small framed dot-signs floating in the dark field above.
The city along the lower edge, with two framed signs above it.
Close view of bleach on black cloth: torn pale blocks at the left, a drawn triangular structure at the right, a small glyph above it. A frayed thread runs loose across the lower edge.
Close in, with a loose thread across the bottom.
A second black cloth: loose pale loops and a long zig-zag stroke across the field, a tight knot of small circles at the left, a straight vertical run of bleach down the left side, and scattered round drips.
A second cloth — looser: loops, a vertical run, drips.
