STEADY HORSE

A paper horse wearing the same marks as everything else

A small white paper horse on a black ground, mid-stride with one foreleg lifted, its whole surface covered in tiny drawn marks
The paper horse standing on two open hands held out towards the camera, the artist behind it in a bleached denim jacket
Held out on two hands, to show how small it is.

A horse about the size of two hands, cut and folded out of white paper and drawn all over in the small marks that fill the black books and the five-metre panel — ladders, boxes, eyes, hooks, short runs of writing that never become words. The marks do not follow the muscles. They sit on it like a coat.

The horse held up close beside a face, its drawn marks readable: small boxes, eyes, hooks and short runs of writing
Close enough to read: the marks sit on it like a coat.
The paper horse held up in profile so that it crosses the artist's eyes
Held up, it crosses the eyes.

It is caught mid-stride with one foreleg lifted, and it stays that way. Held out flat on two open hands it walks nowhere. Held up beside a face it crosses the eyes.

The horse held against the shoulder of the bleached denim jacket, which carries the same drawn marks
The jacket carries the same marks. One vocabulary, two surfaces.

Photographed in October 2019, in the bleached denim jacket that carries the same marks — so the drawing on the jacket and the drawing on the horse are one vocabulary on two surfaces, worn and held at the same time.
